Whether your fashion muse is blogger extraordinaire Chiara Ferragni, movie star Monica Bellucci, Vogue Japan’s Editor-at-large Anna Dello Russo or old-Hollywood icon Sophia Loren, you’ll notice one thing they have in common: they’re all Italian ‘It-Girls’. In fact, they’re pretty much the epitome of how Italian women dress; relaxed yet elegant and never short of an easy-going sex appeal that can be summed up in one word: bombshell. And the best Italian label (in our books at least) that does it right all the time? It’s none other than Dolce & Gabbana, for femininity reigns supreme in their D&G DNA. Here, a few pointers to nailing the La Dolce Vita way of dressing:
Single-hued tones make for a safe option, but it’s the plethora of patterns that really inject a ladylike charm into the clothes. Think lots of delicate lace (even if it’s imprinted), romantic florals (especially roses, a notable trend in all D&G’s Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter shows), animal prints (leopard being a classic) and seductive Sicilian elements (for resort-ready vibes).
It’s all about accentuating the natural figure of a woman (while flaunting the bust, waist or legs), be in the form of body-skimming silhouettes or fit-and-flare princess-like proportions. Sometimes, the dresses can also adopt a sixties shift or A-line cut as well as looser-fitting garments that are belted at the waist to lend an hourglass outline.
Look out for these finer points, which will add the prefect finishing to your Italian-inspired wardrobe: a sweetheart neckline, corset cups and bustier panelling, cropped and high-waist combos, sheer fabrics, silk slips, ruffles and pleats. Anything embellished and embroidered works too!
Start practising your strut in stilettos (and on various ground surfaces too), because in the Italian shoe closet, it’s high heels or the high way! You can also make your shoes the main focus and dress from your feet up. Flats on the other hand, are usually reserved for the beach or poolside, but we’d suggest glamming it up a notch with sequinned beads or metallic straps.
No need to be subtle with your choices cos the bolder, the better! Stash all your essentials either in a classic leather tote, a beautifully embellished bag or a studded clutch that’ll immediately steal the spotlight. Another key accessory to have is a chic pair of sunnies (aviators and oversized frames are currently a fave) for an instant dose of cooler-than-you factor. Other va-va-voom touches are welcome too, especially in the bauble department where you can go all out with tiered, gemstone-encrusted or 3D appliqué necklaces, dangling earrings, bejewelled bangles and stacks of rings.
